Changes to Evaluation & Management Services by the AMA via CPT codes and guidelines in the past 5 years have been extensive. In that same timeframe, CMS/Medicare, in trying to slowly convert to a new definition of Split Shared, had completely different definitions of these services.
Luckily, in 2025, CMS/Medicare and CPT now agree on the definition of Split Shared visits. CMS/Medicare actually says in its manuals that it follows CPT’s definition of these services. Although, CMS/Medicare does offer some additional information and guidance.
